Monchhichi

Have you ever heard of this toy? A stuffed animal monkey to be exact? It was quite popular in Germany but funnily I never thought that it is Japanese nor that it is a thing in the US. So when I spotted them in a display window, some childhood memories came crashing back.

Apparently those cute little love monkeys are more popular than ever here in the US, especially when wearing the National Olympic jersey ☺️

The name by the way, is a combination of the French word ‘Mon’ for mine and ‘chhichi’. A Japanese name based on a phonetic imitation of a sound associated with a baby sucking a pacifier or – like these dolls- its thumb.

  1. My goodness, this is a perfect illustration of the English saying: what goes round, comes round! I had one of those Monchichis as a present when I got my first car in the seventies, but I never knew what the word meant. Thank you for enlightening me!
