Basically a two-in-one holiday:

1. May Day as an ancient celebration of spring mainly on the northern hemisphere

2. International Workers Day or Labor Day with roots in the Labor movement and its efforts to improve working conditions observed in over 160 countries. Not in the US though, where Labor Day is in September (chosen as an apparently politically more neutral date but what we’d call in Germany ‘Extrawurst’ 😉)

Originated in a general strike and uproar – today known as Haymarket riot- May 1st is still overshadowed by demonstrations gone out of control.

So let’s still honor the movement but focus on celebrating spring, enjoying the warmer weather and treating ourselves to some beautiful flowers 🌷
