Following yesterday’s post about pan de muerto, I came across a stunning Día de los Muertos ofrenda at Hudson Yards today. The ofrenda was framed by cascades of vibrant cempasúchil (marigolds) and flanked by elegantly dressed Catrinas — their painted faces and traditional dresses forming a beautiful tableau against the bluest autumn sky.
An ofrenda is the altar created to honor and remember deceased loved ones. Alongside the bright orange flowers, you’ll find velas (candles), fotos (photos of the departed), calaveras (sugar skulls), pan de muerto, and other meaningful offerings that fill the space with color and remembrance.
I love seeing traditions travel across borders — physical and metaphorical — carrying warmth, culture, emotion, memories, and meaning. For expats like me, finding small reminders of home feels truly priceless.
